what is hoodia made from

Hoodia gordonii has gotten increasingly popular in the modern world since it was first featured on British television through BBC in 2003 and later on through CBS’ 60 Minutes. From that point on, the so-called secret to the hunting prowess of the South African Bushmen has been made known to the public and everyone is clamoring to get a piece of this plant if only through the supplements that are made available in their local health stores.

To answer to the demand, manufacturers decided to ride on the popularity of this plant by creating their respective formulations of weight loss supplements containing hoodia extracts as main ingredient. This would have been a good thing because of the variety of options available to consumers if not for the fact that Hoodia gordonii has become a rare item and a well-protected one at that. As such, no one can easily obtain it. A company will need the necessary clearances and only a few pharmaceutical companies were given the go-signal to harvest it straight from the Kalahari desert in South Africa.

Because it can cost a lot to obtain Hoodia, manufacturers tend to cut down costs by mixing this plant’s extracts with other known ingredients of diet supplements to create what they market as ‘pure’ hoodia weight loss products. According to surveys, 80% of the so-called Hoodia-based supplements in the market these days are either just diet supplements injected with a small portion of the extract or blatant fakes.

To experience the benefits of Hoodia gordonii, its extract, P57, should figure in high concentrations in your chosen product. You want to go for supplements that contain this plant only and no other weight loss ingredient such as green tea, caffeine or even ephedra. While these ingredients may be effective on their own, they come with adverse effects on the body so if you want to avoid these health risks, check out what goes into your hoodia-based supplement.

Hoodia-based diet aids usually come in pill or capsule form so naturally, you can’t expect them to contain only the plant’s extracts. You will probably find binders such as gelatin and magnesium phosphate in the product but be wary of any other unfamiliar chemical included in the list of ingredients.

Remember, it’s pure hoodia that you should be taking if you really want to get the most out of your weight loss supplement. Having other ingredients in the mix, though individually effective in weight loss, doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’re going to get more pronounced results. They could just be fillers, for all you know. A small concentration of hoodia extracts on a pill will never be able to deliver the same quality of result as a product that contains purely the extract.

On that thought, it’s also important to make sure that the extract that you’re getting is in fact, P57. This substance can only be obtained from the plant’s stem or its succulent portion. Make sure of the quality of the product you’re going to purchase so you get the best value for your money.
